A telescope is an optical instrument, which brings distant objects closer for examination. It usually consists of a tube containing the optics, and a mounting with a tripod to point it at its target. The optical tube consists of an objective (either a mirror or lens), which gathers light and focuses it to and image, and an eyepiece, which magnifies the image for the eye to see.
